Step Up Reading Together - providing a safe space for children to learn
Mentors within the higher education institution (HEI) provide one to one mentoring of young care experienced children as part of the Reading Together strand. These case studies allow those mentors to discuss the positive impact of the project both on the children, their carers and themselves.
Mentor's story
The mentor said:
“Children who participated in the Reading Together Project experienced optimal confidence building, social interactions and learning. It creates a safe space for them to practice this and learn to apply it in daily life. It allows them to enjoy their time, set boundaries, feel included and empowered in their learning."
The mentor added:
"As a mentor I learned to take a step back, observe and listen, to perceive another’s feelings. Getting to know them and their personalities helped me to further appreciate their progress and celebrate their victories. This project is a passion and I consider it to be one of my hobbies. Mentors are great role models for young people in the Step Up programme.”
