Step Up Case Study – College Connect - From self-doubt to staff badge
College Connect Step Up case studies allows readers to hear from people who have been supported by the Step Up funded projects.
The participant said she wanted to “sample different courses and find out what I am good at and what suits me”
She had expressed an interest in catering as she previously had a part time job at a deli counter so she attended a barrista/catering taster through Step Up. A vacancy became available at the College Coffee shop and initially the participant was reluctant to apply due to insecurity and believing she was not up to the task. She agreed to a trial period, shadowing one of the catering tutors and was closely mentored.
After two weeks she showed great ability and willingness to learn. She achieved her Level 2 award in Principles of food Allergen Awareness and Control and Food Safety.
After 2 months catering position came up in SWC. I helped her fill out the application, went over interview techniques and coached her on potential interview questions. She got the job, has been an employee of SWC since and is enjoying her post.
