Step Up case study - Travel Fund an invaluable resource
Travel Bursaries are provided via the Step Up projects and are intended to elevate the financial burden of students who have to travel long distance to attend university.
Background
This participant balances the responsibilities of being a single parent and a carer whilst maintaining her studies which makes it impossible to maintain a part time job. On her award of a travel bursary,
The participant said:
“The travel fund has been an invaluable resource in my university journey, alleviating a substantial amount of financial pressure. As a single parent and carer, my responsibilities at home demand a significant amount of time and energy, which makes it nearly impossible to maintain a part-time job.
Given the already limited bursary available to students like me, managing day-to-day expenses can be challenging, and at times, it can be difficult to afford even the most basic essentials.
On top of that, with campus situated approximately forty miles from my home, transportation costs are considerable and add up quickly.
Receiving the travel fund has truly made a world of difference. This financial support has enabled me to cover these necessary travel expenses, allowing me to attend classes, participate in vital in-person training, and make the most of my education without constantly worrying about how I’ll manage the next trip.
As a nursing student, my course requires a balance between on-campus learning and hands-on experience in various clinical and community settings. This unique structure not only demands academic focus but also requires consistent commuting. Without the travel fund, I would struggle to keep up with these demands.
I am incredibly grateful for the travel fund. It has been a tremendous help, allowing me to concentrate on my studies, excel in my clinical placements, and ultimately, reach my full potential as I work toward a career in nursing”
