    • Step Up case studies

Focus on people who have a disability, are aged 16 years or over and are unemployed or economically inactive. The stories highlight the impact of support provided to enhance opportunities to gain qualifications and progress into work or stay in work.

    Background

Participant joined this programme to help with his continued learnings. He had suffered a severe life changing brain injury approx. 10 years ago and has since been on a journey to re-learn skills, new skills and coping mechanisms.

Participant has a long-term goal / ambition of being a motivational speaker by using his learnings and coping mechanisms to benefit others. While he also continues working on his own development and knowledge of skills required in this area.

He would often write short poems to capture and put into words motivation empowerment he can share with others.

He would also attend and participate in sports activities as he can see the benefits for improving mental and medical health, through Sports.

    The participant said

“I found the course I attended very helpful in every aspect from the first week. There was always someone there to check up on me without me even asking, I found this very important to make the most of it and be the best you can be”

    The mentor said

“I have seen a very positive change in his confidence and motivation over the past few months and he would be now more determined than before to achieve his long-term goal” of being a Motivational Speaker helping other with his learnings from the challenges / barriers he has had to overcome”

On completing the Step Up DARE programme he enrolled onto the Empower Programme with USEL and has completed an introduction course on the use of Digital Arts, and is currently reviewing other Digital Arts courses available to learn more about Video Editing, with the aim of using this knowledge with driving his social media for his motivational speaking.
