    Background

This participant was an individual living within a supported living facility, who faced significant challenges related to personal issues. Motivated to improve his situation and enhance self-esteem. He began his journey in the Step Up personal development course. This programme focused on confidence-building, self-esteem, motivation, and teamwork.

This individual wanted to manage his personal issues more effectively and develop a stronger sense of self to support long term goals. He sought to break free from feelings of isolation and learn positive social interaction skills.

Throughout the programme, he required a supportive environment to address challenges and develop social skills. Guidance in setting achievable goals and strategies to manage personal issues was essential. The Step Up programme provided a safe space for exploration, with dedicated facilitators who understood the complexities of personal issues.

He encountered several barriers, which affected his confidence and overall well-being. Initially struggling with social interactions and public speaking.

However, he made remarkable progress throughout the Step Up programme. He reported a marked increase in self-confidence, stating:

    "The programme was so empowering”.

After completing the course, he secured a peer support worker position within the Belfast Trust, where he now supports others facing similar challenges.

The impact of these achievements on his life has been profound. He has transitioned from dependency to empowerment, actively contributing to the community and inspiring others.

Looking to the future, he is eager to engage some individuals he works with within the same programme. He expressed a strong desire to advocate for others stating,

"I want to help others, and I know some of my service users would benefit from this programme”
