Step Up case study - succeeding through music
Step Up case studies allows readers to hear from people who have been supported by the Step Up funded projects.
Background
This participant enrolled in the DARE project following struggles with health and confidence.
They said:
“I enrolled on DARE due to struggles arising from my Aspergers and mental health difficulties after previous negative experiences. I needed help with transportation to and from college, assistance getting to and from class, corridors, social areas, and most of all encouragement during class to participate fully.
"I began to grow in confidence within the group setting and really thrived in a weekly music class with my mentor. I was the lead singer by Christmas. In September I was so shy, nervous and really did not speak but somehow, I just found myself and am now encouraging others to sing along and participate.
"Honestly, I have really enjoyed the DARE programme, particularly the weekly music class which has somehow helped to boost my confidence and social skills."
They concluded:
"My next steps include increasing personal independence by taking public transport, travelling independently for social and recreational activities, and seeking part time paid employment.”
