Step Up case study - Disability (DARE) – Back to learning, back to me
Focus on people who have a disability, are aged 16 years or over and are unemployed or economically inactive. The stories highlight the impact of support provided to enhance opportunities to gain qualifications and progress into work or stay in work.
The participant enrolled after several years out of work, with childcare responsibilities impacting their ability to return to employment. They also experienced anxiety and low confidence.
They required support to rebuild confidence, engage socially, and re-enter education. Regular support from the key worker was essential.
Barriers included anxiety and returning to a structured environment. With support, the participant gradually became more confident and engaged. They completed a Level 2 Autism course.
The participant stated:
“I’ve gained confidence and met new people, which has really helped me.”
The mentor commented that:
“They have showed strong resilience and commitment.”
She has progressed to a Level 3 course and aims to work in a school supporting children with additional needs.
