  • Step Up Case studies - Disability (DARE) – From sense of isolation to sense of belonging thanks to Step Up

    Focus on people who have a disability, are aged 16 years or over and are unemployed or economically inactive. The stories highlight the impact of support provided to enhance opportunities to gain qualifications and progress into work or stay in work.

    Having been out of work for approximately ten years, the participant described having “low confidence and self-esteem” but also “an intense desire to turn my life around.” Following an initial meeting  it was agreed that a gradual approach through the Step UP Project would best support her needs.


    A key need identified was a supported reintroduction to social settings. The participant described previously feeling isolated, she also noted past difficulties in large group environments, often feeling overwhelmed. However, the inclusive nature of the programme meant she did not feel singled out or different from the group and instead felt “part of a team.” This sense of belonging enabled her to build connections, even “reaching out, checking in on a few of the younger ones.”


    Initial barriers included anxiety around meeting new people and challenges with time management. The participant shared that “meeting new people and managing these anxieties” was “definitely top of the list.” She also experienced negative thoughts early on, but over time found it easier to “quieten my negative thoughts” and engage more fully. The flexible and supportive environment, including the ability to take breaks when needed, helped her to feel comfortable and stay engaged.


    The participant said: 

     “The programme was an incredible experience” and her “confidence has most definitely improved”.  “I feel like this is just the start of a whole new and improved chapter of me.”

     The participant is now considering further study and a future role as a classroom assistant, combining her passion for learning with supporting others.
