Step up Case study – College Connect + - Surprising introduction to childcare course has led to progression to traineeship
College Connect Step Up case studies allow readers to hear from people who have been supported by the Step-Up funded projects.
After leaving school with no formal qualifications and no clear sense of direction the participant found himself at a difficult crossroad. Recognising the need for support a family member reached out to the Step-Up project to help him access guidance and opportunities. Personal challenges at home were also creating additional barriers, contributing to low confidence, disengagement and a lack of belief in his abilities.
With some hesitation he joined the project but quickly responded positively to the supportive and structured environment. A key part to his progress was the consistent 1-1 mentoring support he received with provided encouragement, guidance and a safe place to build confidence and address personal barriers.
Through vocational tasters he was introduced to Childcare, an area he had not previously considered. He demonstrated a natural ability in this field, supported by his experience caring for his siblings.
He has developed a clear interest in Childcare and a stronger belief in his abilities. He has chosen to progress onto a traineeship in Childcare and hopes to achieve his NVQ Level 2 qualification.
