Step Up case study - Disability (DARE) – From low confidence to new qualifications and a clear next step into work
Focus on people who have a disability, are aged 16 years or over and are unemployed or economically inactive. The stories highlight the impact of support provided to enhance opportunities to gain qualifications and progress into work or stay in work.
The participant enrolled on the Step Up programme after struggling in school and not achieving the qualifications needed for Level 2 progression. He also faced additional challenges related to Autism, ADHD and learning difficulties.
The participant required support to build confidence, improve communication skills, and establish a consistent routine. The key worker provided ongoing guidance and mentoring support.
Initially, the participant experienced low confidence and social anxiety, which made engagement difficult. Through regular encouragement and structured support, he gradually became more comfortable participating.
The participant completed Level 1 Construction qualification alongside Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy.
He shared:
“I feel more confident speaking to people and trying new things.” His mentor noted that “the participant made strong progress in confidence and engagement.”
The participant successfully passed the course and progressed into part-time employment and Further Education, Level 2 Bricklaying.
