Path2Employment (P2E) is a project organised by Workforce Training Services for people who are aged 18 and over and are unemployed or economically inactive.

By identifying barriers to employment, the programme helps develop skills in those from diverse backgrounds with little or no qualifications and returners to work. P2E engages with, motivates and trains participants, equipping them with transferable skills to secure permanent employment.

This project is part funded through the Northern Ireland European Social Fund Programme 2014-2020 and the Department for the Economy.

    Participant's story

The participant signed up to the Path2Employment programme to get support primarily in finding employment. He had worked for a long period in the care environment however, he was looking a change of career. His focus was on finding work in transport or construction.

The initial sign up was done during lockdown but the participant was reassured that we were there to help him build his confidence and offer the training and support he needed to enable him to find work. Not long after signing up, the lockdown restrictions were lifted and a face-to-face meeting was arranged. A plan was drawn up to help remove barriers to employment such as lack of experience and low motivation.

Part of the plan was to discuss in more detail how we would work together to build his confidence and self-esteem. The available training options were discussed and the participant was able to choose what suited his needs. He worked on employability and personal and social development as well as completing CSR and First Aid training. All of which would be a positive addition to his CV.

    Completing a driving qualification

The participant was made aware of an opportunity for driver training through an Academy run by Workforce Training Services in conjunction with the Council. He was fast-tracked on to this having met the criteria. He was also sign posted to a local employer partner. The participant signed up with them and a short time later, he was offered casual work with a building supplier.

He continued to complete the Driving Academy with the employer’s full support.

    Gaining full time work

The participant made such a good impression with the employer that a permanent post was offered as a result. The participant aims to complete his Class 2 training and gain his license, which will enhance and secure his future with his new employer.

Achieving full time work in the sector of his choice has had an amazing effect on the participant’s confidence and mental wellbeing, as he stated himself:

“Workforce Training Services and their Path2Employment team have been fantastic with helping get on the driver training and then getting a full time job with a building company. Even better, I was also directed to further class 2 driving training.”
