WE CAN (2) is a project delivered by Compass Advocacy Network (CAN) which offers a structured and supportive programme, based on gaining skills in a real work environment within social enterprises. The Project provides qualifications and training towards employment and is aimed at adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health issues. This Project is part funded through the Northern Ireland European Social Fund 2014-2020 and the Department for the Economy.

    Participant's Story

Compass Advocacy Network tells us about a participant’s experience on the WE CAN (2) Project.

This participant began his journey with the WE CAN Project in early 2020. Due to the COVID 19 lockdown his induction period was slightly different and all contact and training during this time was through weekly phone calls.

However, later in the year the participant was back gaining ‘hands on’ work experience at CAN’s Can Recycling social enterprise, which focuses on the processing of waste materials. This really boosted his confidence and he gained many new skills including health and safety, time management and working as a team.

The Project’s Senior Skills Trainer explains,

“As part of this participant’s training we gave him some additional cleaning duties as he enjoys this type of work and he had proved he was more than capable of this additional responsibility”.

    Securing employment

The participant went on to successfully secure part-time employment as a cleaner.

    He says,

“I was happy the staff at WE CAN could help me achieve my goal of getting a paid job and I love to do all my tasks keeping the kitchens and bathrooms clean”.
