The Northern Ireland Energy Strategy - ‘The Path to Net Zero Energy’ was published in December 2021 and set out an ambitious pathway to a decarbonised, affordable energy future for everyone in Northern Ireland. It envisages a future that ends price volatility associated with fossil fuels and ensures that more of the money we spend on energy stays in the local economy, helping to create opportunities for jobs and wealth creation.

In doing so, the Energy Strategy identified a new target of 70% of electricity consumption to be from a diverse mix of renewable sources by 2030. This target has since increased to 80% through the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.

    Renewable Electricity Team

The Renewable Electricity Team work on policy development and stakeholder engagement to deliver the levels of renewable electricity generation required to meet future demand in Northern Ireland and to deliver on net zero targets.

    Collaboration and partnership

Collaboration and establishing partnership approaches to deliver on established targets is an essential role for the team. Through Steering Groups, working groups and wider engagement with essential partners and stakeholders the team continues to drive the facilitation of renewable electricity generation for Northern Ireland

Two key consultations on both offshore development and the design of a renewable electricity support scheme have been issued since December 2022 with outcomes to follow through 2023 and beyond. These are just two examples of the work the team engage in, further information about some of our key priorities is available via the following links.
