Work and families

Following a broadly positive response to the public consultation Sharing Parental Rights, Extending Flexibility at Work, the Department for the Economy has introduced new rights for working families from April 2015.

Sharing parental rights, extending flexibility at work

The consultation papers can be viewed at:

Shared parental leave and pay

Working parents in Northern Ireland now have rights to share parental leave and pay in the first year after a child’s birth or adoption

The first piece of guidance that has been developed is technical and aimed at employers who think their employee(s) may be eligible for shared parental leave and/or pay. It is intentionally detailed, to provide as much information as possible.

Other guidance, including guidance aimed at employees, is also being developed and views will be sought on this in due course.
