    The Employer Skills Survey (ESS) is a large-scale survey of employers across the UK, designed to understand the skills challenges faced by business, including their extent, nature and impact within both their existing workforce, and when recruiting.

    The ESS 2024 provides a vital source of intelligence on the skills issues faced by employers. It covers a range of topics:

    •    recruitment and skill-shortage vacancies; 
    •    skills gaps in the existing workforce; 
    •    training and workforce development;
    •    apprenticeships; 
    •    high performance working practices; and
    •    employers’ current and planned use of Artificial Intelligence.

    Correction Notice – Employer Skills Survey 2024 (Northern Ireland)

    The Employer Skills Survey 2024 – Northern Ireland report and associated data tables were published on 6 November 2025. Following publication, an error was identified in the underlying code used to produce a small number of statistical tables. The error has now been rectified and revised versions of the affected tables have been published. This revision has no impact on the findings or narrative within the overarching report, which remains unchanged.
