  • The potential of geothermal energy utilisation from standing column well technologies in Northern Ireland

    • Energy research

    Date published: 30 May 2025

The Department for the Economy (DfE) commissioned Causeway Energies to conduct a study into the potential of geothermal energy utilisation from standing column well technologies in Northern Ireland.

Standing Column Wells are a Geothermal Energy application that has been applied to 500 m depth in North America, but negligibly in the UK and Ireland.

Standing Column Wells are a hybrid between open loop and closed loop Geothermal Heat Exchangers (GHEs), where aquifer water is circulated around the open hole well and heat is drawn from the sink formed in the borehole by a heat pump.
