The consultation document “Further Education Means Business” (February 2004) set out the findings of an extensive review of further education in Northern Ireland, togetherwith policy proposals for the future of the sector.

    The report clearly positioned further
education at the heart of lifelong learning, its aim being to strengthen economic development, enhance social cohesion and advance the individual’s skills and learning. Responses to the public consultation were highly supportive of the new aim and objectives and there was also wide public recognition that Further Education colleges could play an even greater role in driving local, sub-regional and regional economic and workforce development in Northern Ireland.
