  • A data-driven approach for multi-scale GIS-based domestic building energy modelling for analysis, planning, and support decision-making in Northern Ireland

    Topics:
    • Energy,
    • Energy research

    Date published: 10 August 2026

The Department for the Economy commissioned University College Dublin (UCD) to undertake independent research which models domestic energy performance for properties without an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The report summarises the research undertaken, including the methodologies used, limitations and results. Interactive maps allow users to explore actual and modelled energy performance across multiple geographies.

    Accessibility for the interactive maps

Each map is colour-coded, with a different colour representing each EPC rating. A control box in the top-right corner of the map allows users to switch between actual EPC ratings, estimated EPC ratings, and a combined view of both.

Users can zoom in and out using the mouse scroll wheel and move around the map by clicking and dragging.

When a user hovers over an area, the name of the geographical area is displayed.

Selecting an area opens a pop-up box containing additional information, including the mode and median EPC rating, counts of properties in each EPC rating band (A–G), the total EPC count, the total number of properties, and coverage.

This information can also be provided on request.
