Search begins for new Chair of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland
Date published:
The Department for the Economy (DfE) has launched a public appointment competition to appoint a new Chair to the Board of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland.
The Consumer Council plays an important role in championing consumer interests and placing consumers at the heart of its work. As the north of Ireland’s statutory and independent consumer representative body, it works to ensure that consumer protection legislation and regulation operate effectively for consumers.
The role of Chair provides an opportunity to lead the Consumer Council as it enters a significant period of organisational transition. This includes delivery of its 2026–2032 Corporate Plan, potential expansion of its statutory responsibilities and increasing complexity in the consumer landscape. Key challenges include cost-of-living pressures, the growth of digital markets and the transition to net zero.
The incoming Chair will play a key leadership role in guiding the organisation through this period of change and growth. The successful candidate will be expected to provide clear strategic leadership, robust governance assurance and effective external influence.
DfE is committed to the principles of public appointments based on merit, independent assessment, openness and transparency of process. The Department is also committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified applicants irrespective of religious belief, gender, race, political opinion, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or whether or not they have dependants.
It is anticipated the new Chair will be appointed for a term of up to four years with effect from 1January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. The time commitment normally amounts to 1.5 days per week, or equivalent and remuneration amounts to £26,656 per annum (under review).
