Economy Minister Gordon Lyons has visited County Fermanagh to see first-hand the preparations those working in the tourism sector have made for what they anticipate will be a busy summer season.

Speaking from the shores of Lough Erne the Minister said: “Tourism was one of the sectors most severely impacted by the restrictions imposed by the Covid pandemic. However, it has also demonstrated itself to be one of the most resilient industries.

“Having met with businesses working in the tourism sector here in Fermanagh I have been struck by their optimism and positivity. Visitor numbers are continuing to grow with overseas visitor numbers increasing month on month. In addition, we are seeing more and more people from the Republic of Ireland visiting Northern Ireland while those here are choosing to holiday at home. All of this is having a positive effect on our economy with Tourism NI cardholder spend data, for January-March 2022, showing spend on key tourism-related categories has increased by 25% compared with the same period in 2019.”

He continued:  “Today I got a small chance to see what is on offer to visitors and sightseers to Fermanagh. Along with the beautiful scenery, there really is something for everyone from quality accommodation offerings to unique visitor destinations.”
