    The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency has today released headline results from the 2016 Northern Ireland Annual Business Inquiry (ABI) survey.

    Growth in aGVA and turnover between 2015 and 2016

    The key findings include:

    • Total aGVA was estimated to be worth £21.5 billion at basic prices in 2016. This represented a rise of 5.4% (£1.1 Billion) compared to 2015.
    • Turnover for NI businesses increased by 2.7% between 2015 and 2016 to £68.9 billion, while the cost of purchases of goods, services and energy increased by 1.9% to £44.3 billion.
    • Results for the NI Non-financial business economy show a faster pace of growth for aGVA than the UK overall. UK aGVA recorded an increase of % compared to % in NI between 2015 and 2016.

    Growth driven by strong increases in the production, construction and non-financial services sectors

    • The production sector, which accounts for 30.0% of aGVA in the NI non-financial business economy, recorded an increase of 6.8% (£413m) in aGVA between 2015 and 2016.
    • The construction sector, following a period of decline between 2008 and 2013, has recorded three consecutive years of aGVA growth. Between 2015 and 2016 aGVA recorded an 18.8% increase (£356m), growing from £1.9 billion to £2.3 billion.
    • aGVA in the NI non-financial services sector increased by 3.8% (£289m) to £7.9 billion in 2016. Key contributors to this increase include:

    a)Professional, scientific and technical activities (+£131m or 9.3%)

    b)Transportation and storage activities (+£93m or 6.3%)

    c)Accommodation and food service activities (+£72m or 8.9%)

    Smaller growth in the distribution sector

    • The Distribution industries consist of companies engaged in Wholesale and retail trade and cover the entire Northern Ireland wholesale and retail sector. Wholesale and retail trade recorded a marginal aGVA increase of 0.8% (£40m) between 2015 and 2016.
