A trader who sold counterfeit mini-figures at a Belfast market was today fined a total of £500 at Belfast Magistrates’ Court. The court also ordered the destruction of the goods.

    Trading Standards Service

In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service (TSS), Mr Alan Crockard (36), of De Wind Drive, Comber, pleaded guilty to two charges under the Trade Marks Act 1994. The charges related to the exposing for sale and possession of counterfeit mini-figures.

The investigation arose following visits conducted by TSS Officers to a Belfast market. During these visits it was discovered that Mr Crockard was selling mini-figures which were likely to be mistaken for genuine Lego mini-figures.

Lego holds several registered trademarks relating to the shape and design of its mini-figures. Copying or selling these figures without permission is a criminal offence under the Trade Marks Act 1994.

A spokesperson for the Trading Standards Service said: “We urge consumers not to purchase counterfeit items, no matter how appealing they may seem. Buying counterfeit goods supports criminal activity and undermines legitimate businesses.”

Consumers who suspect they have purchased counterfeit goods are encouraged to report the matter to Consumerline on 0300 123 6262.

    Notes to editors:

    1. The Trade Marks Act 1994 creates offences for applying trade marks to goods without the permission of the trade mark holder and for supplying and offering to supply those goods.

    2. The maximum penalty for an offence under Section 92 of the Act is 10 years in prison and/or a fine.
