Project Gigabit is the UK Government’s programme to enable hard to reach communities to access gigabit capable broadband, building on the success of Project Stratum, which brought high-speed broadband access to 81,000 premises in Northern Ireland.

    Introduction

The UK Government’s ambition remains to deliver nationwide gigabit capable broadband as soon as possible. DfE recognises that parts of Northern Ireland are not commercially viable without public support. Accordingly, the UK Government has committed £5 billion across the UK to reach the hardest to serve communities. These funds will be allocated through a package of coordinated, mutually supportive interventions collectively known as Project Gigabit.

Funded by the UK Government, DfE is working alongside Building Digital UK (BDUK) and has appointed Fibrus Networks Ltd to deliver Project Gigabit in Northern Ireland.

The £34.6m contract, funded by the UK government and managed by the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy, will bring gigabit-capable broadband to over 9,000 rural premises across Northern Ireland. Project Gigabit is the UK government’s programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access gigabit-capable broadband and builds on the success of Project Stratum, which brought high speed broadband access to 81,000 premises in Northern Ireland.
