Mapping Northern Ireland's financial services sector

Date published: 22 June 2020

The services sector in NI accounts for about 75 per cent of Gross Value Added (GVA) and 80 per cent of employment. NI sells about £6.5 billion of services outside of the region. Most goes to GB (about two thirds) but we sell around £1.5 billion into the EU, over £1bn of which is across the border into the Republic of Ireland.

The financial services sector and related activities in Northern Ireland have been identified as a key element of economic strategy and a pillar for growth, yet there is limited information to quantify and qualify the landscape of activity. In order to fully assess the potential impacts of EU exit on the financial services sector, and to prepare for the opportunities which may emerge as a result of the UK's independent trade policy, the department commissioned this work to develop its understanding of the sector.
