    This publication provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of key statistics and information relating to energy in Northern Ireland, pulling together data that has previously been published by a number of sources such as the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The majority of statistics and data included are Accredited Official Statistics or Official Statistics.

    The report is structured around six chapters, where each chapter is prefaced by a key point summary, including:

    1) contextual information for energy in Northern Ireland;

    2) the economic contribution of energy to the local economy;

    3) electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply;

    4) renewable generation of electricity;

    5) total energy consumption; and

    6) energy and the consumer.

    An infographics report has also been developed which is a short, supplementary report released alongside the main report, and is intended to provide visual representations of some of the key statistics and information relating to energy.

    The full report and the infographics report are available at: https://www.economy-ni.gov.uk/articles/energy-northern-ireland

    Notes to editors:

    1. In 2016, following development work with key stakeholders and data providers and agreement with officials in the Department’s Energy Division, statisticians within the Department’s Analytical Services Division first published a new statistical report intended to provide a comprehensive and accessible overview of key statistics and information relating to energy in Northern Ireland.
    2. The report has subsequently been updated every two years, where this sixth publication provides a comprehensive update and commentary using the latest available data at the time of writing (end of April 2026). While some data presented relates to 2025 or 2026, other figures relate to earlier periods. The most recent data can be accessed via the links provided throughout the publication or via the Quality Report.
    3. Due to resource constraints, the 2024 published report was a shorter infographic-based report. The 2026 report reverts to the full reporting format alongside a supplementary infographics report which is intended to provide visual representations of some of the key statistics and information relating to energy.
    4. In addition to the sources mentioned in the article body, other sources include the Utility Regulator, the System Operator for Northern Ireland (SONI), Northern Ireland Electricity Networks and the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland. Further details on data sources and quality are provided in the accompanying Quality Report, including Annex A, available on the Energy in Northern Ireland page.
    5. General information on the report can be obtained from Sean Donnelly, DfE Analytical Services by email at energystatistics@economy-ni.gov.uk or by telephone on 028 9052 979
