The Credit Unions (Amendment) Bill, which will reform and modernise Credit Union legislation, is to be introduced to the Assembly.
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has welcomed Executive approval for the Credit Unions Bill to start its legislative journey.
The Minister said:
“Credit unions play an important role in their local communities by encouraging savings, providing affordable credit, and supporting financial inclusion. We have a particularly strong credit union movement, and the sector is well placed to contribute to wider policy objectives on inclusive growth, community wealth building, and reducing reliance on high-cost credit.
“I look forward to introducing the Credit Unions Bill to the Assembly. This is an important piece of legislation that will have a positive impact on the almost 600,000 members of Credit Unions here.”
Notes to editors:
- The Bill will modernise the Credit Unions (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 by updating provisions on membership, governance, operational flexibilities and enabling powers for the sector.
