Construction Industry Training Board NI reappointments - pen pictures

The Department for the Economy has made a number of re-appointments to the Board of the Construction Industry Training Board Northern Ireland (CITB NI).

Chair

Maurice Johnston

Maurice is currently Architect/Director for Bryson Architects Ltd in Belfast. A member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland. Maurice has worked for Bryson Architects Ltd since 1997, holding Director position since 2004. In his current position Maurice oversees private and public sector construction projects ranging from thousands to millions of pounds, having sound commercial knowledge. His role as Director involves company development including personnel, finance and commercial management. 

Maurice has been a practicing Architect since the early 1990s with substantial experience in the construction industry, across both the private and public sectors, and from domestic to multi-million pound projects. A specialist recruited member on the Board of the Irish Football Association since 2012 for a £40M national stadium development until its completion in 2016 and on the associated NI Government partnered National Football Stadium Project Board. He has been CITB NI Chair since 2014.

Christine Boyle

With over 18 years in the commercial roofing sector, Christine is currently employed as CEO of Senergy Innovations. Ms Boyle continues to bring a sound knowledge of the roofing industry as well as her valuable perspective of off-site manufacturing for the future construction industry. She has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2013.

She does not hold any other public appointments.

Maria Bradley

Maria is currently the HR and Quality Manager in Gilbert Ash. She continues to bring a strong commitment to improvement and strategic development in relation to employee and skills issues. She has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2013.

Ciaran Brolly

Ciaran Brolly is currently a Regional Learning Organiser with UNITE Trade Union.

Ciaran’s role involves engaging with Construction industry stakeholders in meeting the skill gaps in the sector. UNITE’s aim is to fully qualify the Northern Ireland construction workforce and to meet the needs of workers seeking upskilling. This involves building meaningful and constructive partnerships with government and its agencies, employers and their federations, other trade unions and CITB (NI).

Previous to this role Ciaran was Lecturer and Head of Department in NWRC (1984 – 2008). Throughout his time at NWRC, Ciaran lectured in Accountancy, Business Studies, Industrial Relations, Health & Safety and Trade Union Studies

Ciaran is a past member of the Consumer Council for NI, a Board Member of NIHE, member of the Derry Diocesan Committee of CCMS, and a member of the Outer North Partnership Board. Ciaran is currently Chair of the Governors of St. Brigid’s College, Derry and has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2013.

Chris Corken

Chris has been working for Belfast Metropolitan College since 2003 and is currently Head of Department for Science, Engineering and Construction. Chris holds a Bachelor of Engineering from The Open University, is Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and registered with the Engineering Council UK as Incorporated Engineer. Prior to his role at Belfast Met Chris has 12 years’ experience in the Electrical Building Services sector on commercial and industrial projects across the UK and Ireland ranging from retail outlets to power stations.

Chris develops and implements strategies to support an economically relevant and innovative curriculum in engineering, applied science and building services, providing technical support and guidance to local SMEs through the Department for the Economy and Invest NI programmes such as Assured Skills Academies and Collaborative Networks.

Chris was also part of a Curriculum Development Strategy Team working with the Department for Employment and Learning to develop and implement the new Youth Training and Apprenticeship strategies for NI and has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2014.

Siobhan Hassard

Siobhan has over 30 years' experience in staff training and development. She started her career in retail management focusing specifically on staff training and for the past 12 years Siobhan has been employed by McCormack Demolition as Administration Manager.

Siobhan's current role involves office management, recruitment and staff training and development. Siobhan also undertakes PA duties to Company Directors and has responsibility for payroll and office administration. Siobhan's current role allowed her to become involved in the NI Demolition Association (NIDA) and she co-ordinated a series of demolition specific training events on behalf of eight member companies. She has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2014.

Siobhan brings strong communication skills to the Board.

David Henry

David has been Managing Director of Henry Brothers (Magherafelt) Ltd. since 2000 having previously held the post of Contracts Director. 

He joined the family business on completing his formal education and worked initially as a site operative before progressing through supervisory and management roles to his current position as Managing Director.

David has overall responsibility for strategy, growth and profitability together with review of capital expenditure and budgets. He makes frequent site visits and is actively involved in the procurement process for new contracts. The company generally operates in the commercial construction market for a variety of government and private clients.

David firmly believes that training and development of personnel are key factors to company progression and expansion. His own commitment to development has included achieving Fellowship status of the CIOB and gaining the Institute of Directors Certificate in Company Direction. 

He is also a member of the Construction Employers Federation Council, a member of the CBI Council and sits on the Council for the Institute of Directors in NI. He is a Governor for Rainey Endowed Grammar School Magherafelt (unremunerated) and became a Board member of CITB NI in 2014

Clare Mahon

Clare is currently a lecturer and the Course Director for the BSc Hons in Construction Engineering and Management programme in the Ulster University. Mrs Mahon continues to bring extensive experience of training construction students in Northern Ireland. She has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2013.

Derek Martin

Derek was previously Joint Managing Director and a Director of H&J Martin Ltd since 1988. He is a graduate in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast, a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, a Fellow of the Institute of Building and a member of the Institute of Directors. Mr Martin was a member of the Construction Employers Federation Council for many years and is a Past President.

Appointed to the Board of CITB in 2014 where he is currently a member of the Audit and Risk Committee. He holds two other public appointments, Chair of HSENI, (remuneration £19,245 per annum) and is one of two Independent Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly Commission Secretariat Audit and Risk Committee (remuneration £337 per day).

Derek brings a range of skills and knowledge to his role including experience in training staff.

Jackie Pollock

Jackie has taken up the role of Regional Secretary of UNITE for the Ireland region and has been in this role since early 2015. Prior to that Jackie was a senior official for the union for over a decade and has worked as a full time workers representative since 1996. Jackie’s background is in construction and shipbuilding, a time served plumber he started his working life on construction sites and later joined Harland and Wolff as a plumber/welder for over 16 years.

Jackie, as a leading figure in the Irish trade union movement, has served as chair of the Northern Ireland Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions since 2013. Jackie has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2014. Throughout his time as a workers representative Jackie has continuously pushed to improve the conditions of all workers but young workers and apprentices in particular, Jackie sits on the board of the Engineering Training Council and the Joint Industry Board and has played an integral role in pioneering new approaches for preserving the construction trades such as ‘SparkSafe’ and other initiatives.

Jackie is also a Director in the Greater Shankill Partnership through his intensive community and voluntary involvement.

Bryan Vaughan

Bryan Vaughan is Director of the Vaughan Group the family house building firm. Bryan has held this position for 20 years having also worked as Site Manager and Contracts Manager. Bryan is responsible for the day to day management of the company including profitability, quality and strategy for the future. Bryan is currently a Member of the Chartered Institute of Building and is on the Council of the Construction Employers Federation (CEF). Bryan is also a member of the CEF Private Housing Committee (past Chairman) and of NHBC regional and technical committee. Bryan has been a CITB NI Board Member since 2013.
