Evaluation has a crucial role in assessing whether policies or programmes have actually met their intended objectives.

Value for money

Evaluation can help ensure good Value For Money by identifying difficulties, preventing the repetition of mistakes, revealing positive points and generally learning lessons which may be of use in other projects and/or other Departments.

More detail on taking forward evaluation can be found in the Northern Ireland Guide to Expenditure Appraisal and Evaluation (NIGEAE), which can be found at:

Further Project and Programme Management guidance, including a number of useful evaluation templates, can be found at the Programme and project management and assurance section of the DoF website:

Departmental Economists will be happy to advise on a case-by-case basis on the application of the appraisal and evaluation guidance.
