Considering energy in Northern Ireland to 2050

The Department has published a report on a long term vision for energy covering electricity, heat and transport: Envisioning the Future, Considering Energy in Northern Ireland to 2050.

2050 vision

The Department has published the report on a long term vision for energy covering electricity, heat and transport. The study has been developed from a recommendation in the ETI Committee’s report on their inquiry into renewable energy and a commitment included within the Sustainable Energy Action Plan which was published by the Department in May 2012.

“Envisioning the Future: Considering Energy in Northern Ireland to 2050” is a vision of what might happen by 2050: the outcomes are neither a prediction nor a plan and the study does not, therefore, propose a strategy. Instead, the vision is intended to guide thinking on what can be achieved in 2050 and what early decisions and activities may be needed to support development towards 2050.

Assumptions within the report were refined by holding sector specific stakeholder workshops for electricity, heat and transport, to gather and consider views.

The main report is supplemented by Sector Annexes which present analyses of the most important energy supply, demand and infrastructure sectors independently.

Project is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland.
