The Apprentice of the Year awards provide a platform to showcase excellence in, and raise awareness of, the Apprenticeship and Higher Level Apprenticeship programmes. It promotes the consistent development of skills and promotes their value to employers.

The Apprentice of the Year Awards recognise:

  • Apprentices who are making a significant contribution in their workplace and have shown a dedication to excel in their professional development and learning
  • Partnerships between employers and Training Suppliers that support the continuous growth of apprenticeships in Northern Ireland.

Three Awards

There are three awards:

  • Apprentice of the Year (level 2-3)
  • Higher Level Apprentice of the Year (Level 4+)
  • Employer Innovation Award (acknowledges excellence between the employer and Training Supplier in the design and delivery of Apprenticeship training)

Finalists for all awards were shortlisted and notified the week beginning 3 September. 

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at Belfast City Hall on 6 November 2018.

Apprentice / Higher Level Apprentice of the Year Award

Who can enter?

Apprentices must have been on a Department for the Economy contracted Apprenticeship / Higher Level Apprenticeship programme in 2018 working towards a full Apprenticeship framework at Level 2 - 3 and or Level 4 and above.

Who can nominate an apprentice?

Nominations can be made by the Training Supplier or the Employer but both must complete the nomination form and sign the relevant sections.

What are the judges looking for?

The judges are looking for entries which showcase the difference apprentices have made to the organisation they work in.

Employer Innovation Award

Who can enter? 

It is open to employers from all sectors engaging with Training Suppliers contracted by the Department for the Economy to deliver the ApprenticeshipsNI or Higher Level Apprenticeships programme.

Who can submit an application?

Joint nominations are required with either the training supplier or the employer taking the lead. Both must complete the relevant sections of the nomination form.

What are the judges looking for?

The judges are looking for entries which showcase excellence between the training supplier and employer in the delivery of apprenticeship training.

The deadline for nominations was noon on Friday 29 June 2018.

If appropriate, nominees may be entered for more than one award.

The nominees for Apprentice and Higher Level Apprentice of the Year must have been an apprentice during 2018.

Why enter – what are the rewards?

All finalists for the awards will receive an invitation to an awards event in Belfast City Hall on 6 November 2018 where the winners will be announced.

They will also receive:

  • a top accolade for excelling and playing a leading part as an apprentice at their organisation
  • the honour of being named the best apprentice in Northern Ireland; and
  • a prize for finalists and the overall winners.

Employers and Training Suppliers will receive:

  • publicity as an exemplar to other employers
  • public recognition for putting apprenticeships at the heart of your organisations.

How does the process work?

The Apprentice of the Year Awards are a competitive process with several stages:

  • applications are received and processed to confirm eligibility;
  • eligible applications are referred to a judging panel who will choose up to three finalists in each category
  • judges will visit the finalists of the Apprentice/Higher Level Apprentice of the Year category in their workplace and meet both the apprentice and their employer. A short video of each finalist at work is recorded to be shown at the Apprentice of the Year 2018 event and potentially in further promotional material
  • the employer nomination will be judged on the written application with a follow up visit by the judges
  • the finalists will be invited to The Apprenticeship of the Year awards ceremony where the winners will be announced.
