Date published: 13 August 2021

Covid-19 and subsequent restrictions have had a profound impact on the economy and society of Northern Ireland. The first paper below documents the consequences with respect to output, businesses, labour market and wider society, as well as outlining the prospects of recovery amidst current and upcoming risks.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, commonly known as the furlough scheme, has been instrumental in supporting Northern Ireland’s labour market during Covid-19 restrictions. With changes to the scheme during the summer and as the scheme draws to a close, the second paper below provides an assessment of HMRC furlough statistics up to June 2021, with focus on furlough numbers by age, gender, sector, area and furlough type.
