Northern Ireland Economic Output Statistics

The economic output statistics were published today by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA).

Commentary

  • Output in the services sector decreased by 0.3% over the fourth quarter of 2023 and increased by 1.9% over the year.
  • Retail output in NI saw a decrease of 0.7% in Quarter 4 2023 and an increase of 0.6% over the year.
  • Production sector output increased by 0.4% over the fourth quarter of 2023 and decreased by 3.3% over the year.
  • When comparing current output with the pre-Coronavirus pandemic levels seen in Quarter 4 2019, Northern Ireland production output is 1.1% above its pre-pandemic level and Northern Ireland service output is 7.0% above its pre-pandemic level. In contrast Northern Ireland Retail output remains 6.3% below its pre-pandemic level.

Services Sector Output

  • The NI IOS decreased by 0.3% over the quarter (October - December). NI IOS increased by 1.9% over the year. UK output decreased by 0.2% over both the quarter and the year.
  • When the most recent four quarters are compared to the previous four quarters the NI services sector increased by 2.5% while the UK services sector increased by 0.4%.
  • NI services output is now 7.0% above the pre-Coronavirus pandemic level seen in Quarter 4 2019 while UK services output is 3.3% above its Quarter 4 2019 level. 
  • The 0.3% quarterly decrease in NI services output reflected decreases in the Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; accommodation and food service sector (0.3%); the Other services sector (5.5%); and the Transport, storage, information and communications sector (2.1%). The only sector to show a quarterly increase was the Business services and finance sector (1.4%).[1]
  • The 1.9% increase seen in NI services output over the year was driven by rises seen in Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; accommodation and food service sector (1.3%) and the Business services and finance sector (8.9%). In contrast the Other services sector decreased 0.7% while the Transport, storage, information & communication sector fell by 3.7%.
  • The 2.5% increase seen in NI services output when the current four quarters are compared to the previous four quarters was driven by increases in three sectors, the Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; accommodation and food service by 1.1%; the Business services and finance sector by 9.5%; and the Other services sector by 5.7%. The Transport, storage, information and communication sector decreased by 3.6%.

[1] Note that each broad sector index and the overall IOS index are seasonally adjusted independently of each other. It is not appropriate to directly compare the changes in the broad sectors to the changes in the overall IOS index.

Retail Sector Output

  • The retail sales sector refers to SIC 47 (Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles) and is a subset of the Index of Services (IOS).
  • Retail output in NI saw a decrease of 0.7% in Quarter 4 2023 and an increase of 0.6% over the year.
  • GB RSI output experienced a decrease of 0.8% over the quarter and a decrease of 1.6% over the year.
  • NI RSI output in Quarter 4 2023 is 9.7% below the series high seen in Quarter 3 2020 and 3.1% higher than the series low (Quarter 1 2021).
  • NI RSI output remains 6.3% below the pre-Coronavirus pandemic level seen in Quarter 4 2019 while GB RSI output is now 3.7% below its Quarter 4 2019 level.

Production Sector Output

  • The NI IOP increased by 0.4% over the quarter (October - December) and decreased by 3.3% over the year.
  • The UK IOP was decreased 1.1% over the quarter and increased by 0.1% over the year.
  • When the most recent four quarters are compared to the previous four quarters, the NI production sector decreased by 2.9% while the UK production sector decreased by 0.3%.
  • The NI IOP is 1.1% above the pre-Coronavirus pandemic level seen in Quarter 4 2019, while the UK is 8.7% below its Quarter 4 2019 level.
  • The quarterly increase in NI production output of 0.4% was driven by increases in Manufacturing (0.7%), and Mining and quarrying sector (3.3%). This was partially offset by decreases in Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (0.1%) and Water supply, sewerage and waste management (Inc. recycling) (1.2%).
  • The annual decrease in NI production output of 3.3% was driven by decreases in all four sectors - Manufacturing (3.2%), Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (3.3%), Water supply, sewerage and waste management (Inc. recycling) (2.6%) and Mining and quarrying (4.7%).

  • The NI Composite Economic Index and Quarterly Construction Enquiry are scheduled for publication on 28 March 2024.
  • The next Labour Market Report will be published on 16 April 2024.
  • The Index of Production and Index of Services reports for Quarter 1 2024 will be published on 13 June 2024.
